When I Fly Towards You Review

I'm not really well-versed in C-dramas, so it's not going to be as elaborate as my K-dramas reviews, but here we go.

For a short review, I'll say that it was a nice feel-good drama, and overall: 8.5/10.

Did "When I Fly Towards You" manage to become your comfort drama?

In the autumn of 2012, Su Zai Zai transferred to Yucai High School and immediately fell for Zhang Lu Rang. Despite his impressive academic success and privileged background, Lu Rang struggles with self-doubt, overshadowed by his genius younger brother.

Things change when he meets the cheerful Su Zai Zai, who, along with their friends Gu Ran, Guang Fang and Jiang Jia, helps him find his true self.

As they support each other's goals, Lu Rang and Zai Zai's relationship deepens, with romance blossoming among their group. (MyDramaList)

Let's talk about the storyline of "When I Fly Towards You".
Let's talk about the storyline of "When I Fly Towards You".

The storyline focuses mainly on friendship, youth and romance. If you want to watch something with more things happening, this won't be for you. However, if you're looking for something light, to turn your brain off and enjoy the process, this is great.

Personally, I didn't mind seeing them together, travelling for the 5th time this year and learning with each other as a plot device to get Zai Zai and Lu Rang closer.

To my surprise, they still tried to talk about a bit heavier topics: finding what they want to do in life after high school, being a shadow for their brother, and changing themselves for the better for the people around them.

These were one of my favourite parts of the drama, even though some stories needed a bit more time. One example is the story about finding what you want to do with your life.

It's an interesting topic, and a lot of students do feel lost around that time.

However, the last 5 episodes were a big downgrade for the series. Everything was mushed together: university life with a bit of drama, work life, and we mostly saw Lu Rang and Zai Zai's side.

As much as they were cute, and the main people, I NEED to know about the second couple, and the fifth wheel too!

The writers decided that now was the perfect time to add a bit of drama, when the series is almost over, and no more storylines were fully developed.

I heard they had some issues when shooting, because of the low budget and COVID, but it would have been better than if we had finished everything at school. There is no need to go to adult life, maybe even finish at the start of their university days.

Storyline: 7/10

Let's meet the characters!
Let's meet the characters!

As this is a drama that mostly focuses on friends and romance, the characters are the most important thing, and they were great.

Lu Rang's story was very interesting, and it would have been amazing if they had shown how he proceeded to interact with his family after school. But it was nice to see where he was coming from and why he was so closed down at first.

I don't really enjoy the trope where a woman chases the guy, but I have to admit that Zai Zai was very cute. She had a very normal upbringing, and her brightness was always exciting to watch.

It didn't feel too much or too little.

(The jealousy moments between them were also very cute to watch.)

Gu Ran had gone from one of those annoyingly hilarious characters to one of my favourites. He was great for comedy, and also, he and Jiang Jia quickly became the best couple (without being a couple) in the drama.

We needed more scenes with them!!!

His story was also nice, about his parents being too busy for him, and finding comfort in his friends. It was really nice to see his growth and how he can rely on his friends at times.

Jiang Jia had also made a great impression on me. She was always so bright and a good friend to everyone.

However, I wanted a bit more from her story, more trials and tribulations of how she finds herself and what she would like to do. I don't think asking everyone what her talent is is a good solution.

Guan Fang had an amazing storyline from start to finish. How dedicated he was to his grandma was really admirable. And even if he always stuck out in the group, he was the most relatable (by being the fifth wheel).

Not a lot of other characters were that memorable, maybe except for Uncle.

The whole friendship group was very enjoyable to watch, and I could only find a few faults in their stories.

This drama has so many OSTs that it was hard to do a very accurate ranking for it; however, I'll try to summarise.

Most of the songs are quite memorable and enjoyable, and one even went to my playlist! (Zeyue "Before")

I feel like most of the songs caught the perfect vibe of youth and were easy to listen to. For example, Lin Chen Yang's "When I Fly Towards You" (opening song) was very uplifting and stuck in my mind.

Even if the song was a bit sad, for example, Yin Luxi's "I Think I Will" was still a delight to listen to.

There are some misses on the playlist; however, we have enough great songs already, so I don't want to take too many points. It's not every day that I find an OST I put on my playlist.
