Soon we will be mentioning Women's Day (March 8th), and how else can I better commemorate it than by talking about great women in K-dramas!

Congratulate all the women around you, have a cake, and read about great characters, dramas that were created to talk about women's struggles and more!

Comment below what you would like to add to the list!

Bae Mun Jeong from "Law and the City"
Bae Mun Jeong from "Law and the City"

Bae Mun Jeong has worked her way up very diligently, as we've seen in the drama.

One case has stuck with me since then, where she went to a construction site. At first, the workers didn't pay much attention to her and didn't even want to listen, but she was the one who found the mistake and knew better than the workers in some respects.

This perfectly showcases her character and how much she enjoys doing her work.

She gets pregnant a bit later in the episodes, and it was interesting to see how a workaholic would deal with this. While she's considering her options, she learns that her superior doesn't want Mun Jeong to go on maternity leave and search for her replacement.

This was great timing for the drama to showcase yet another struggle. Having maternity leave is within her rights, but the superior dismisses the idea.

Will it be work or her baby?

For a woman, pregnancy can be something that pushes back her career, and it's a great challenge for a character like Mun Jeong. However, she finds a way to make it work both ways.

Another incident where I understood how much I like Mun Jeong was the metro scene. She saw a pregnant woman standing while a man was sitting in the priority seating. Without a word, she kept staring at the man till he stood up and walked away, and the woman could sit down.

She's not afraid to point out injustice that happens in the workplace and outside of it, and I'm glad we have a character like her.

Kaya from "Pro Bono"
Kaya from "Pro Bono"

Kaya was in the drama just for a short while, but she made a great impression on me.

At first, her case seemed to be a simple divorce, but the story unfolded with very interesting plot twists. Kaya was sexually assaulted in her hometown, and that's why she ran away to South Korea.

She's not a perfect person and has made some mistakes, but stayed strong throughout the story (even when everything about her sexual assault was nitpicked) and fought for a better future for herself and other immigrants like her.

Every woman in "When Life Gives You Tangerines"
Every woman in "When Life Gives You Tangerines"

It would be impossible for me to write this post without mentioning this perfect drama.

"When Life Gives You Tangerines" portrays the generational growth of women, their struggles, as well as their happy moments. The mother-daughter relationship takes the biggest part of the story.

It starts with Ae Sun and her mother, and continues to Ae Sun and Geum Myeong.

Oh Ae Sun has struggled to find her own place since her childhood. Her mother wanted her to stay with the dad's side of the family, while they looked at her as just another mouth to feed.

It didn't stop her from dreaming about becoming a poet, getting a lot of money for her mother. Her dreams changed, but her willpower never became weak. Now her wish was for her Geum Myeong to grow confidently and let her do what she wants.

The drama shows girlhood and womanhood from different persepectives and it's heartbreakingly beautiful to watch.

Every victim of abuse in "As You Stood By"
Every victim of abuse in "As You Stood By"

This has been a very hard drama to watch, especially the first few episodes. It deals with domestic abuse in different forms of society and how it is handled.

To stomach everything, and also think about women who are going through it every day, is hard, but such an important conversation.

The main leads go with the idea of killing the abuser and thinking it will finally give the victim peace. It doesn't actually happen as the victim now stresses over so many other things.

"As You Stood By" was filmed very nicely, and I liked how they didn't always show women getting abused, but they let us know in other ways, and that was enough. We do not always have to see the most gruesome stuff to get it.

It's important to keep talking about domestic violence, and hopefully, we as a society learn to deal with it better with time. Let's stop blaming victims and hold abusers accountable.

Honourable mentions (left to right): Oh Mi Seon, "Our Unwritten Seoul" sisters, Lee Da Eum.

Lee Da Eum from "Our Movie" is a wonderful sunshine who fought a battle with terminal illness but never gave up on her dreams.

Oh Mi Seon from "Typhoon Family": even after getting sexist remarks, she showed everyone with her work ethic that she can do more than they think.

"Our Unwritten Seoul": yet another drama that delves a bit into mother-daughter relationship, mental health problems and more. It's always nice to see the growth and communication they reach by the end of the drama.
